1.The Lowdown on
Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art
It is reactionary art; lacking
in taste saying that surrealism is a strict manifesto, saying that lowbrow is
all inclusive and any artist can do this kind of art, it is more of a “people
thing”, it is a social scene at that point in time. They have a common love or
experience that they want to add to it. It reaches out to the masses and people
can really relate to this art and people are interested, it goes back to folk
art. Rock posters are huge with bright colors and psychedelic art. This started
underground comics. There is always a narrative punch a lot of dynamics in this
art. This video illustrates that Highbrow requires some sort of intelligence; it
is something that is learned. They still are not accepted into the art culture.
Displaying Modern
Art: The Tate Approach: International modern art museum in the first year had 4
million visitors which makes it the most popular one in the world. This time
period looked at ideologies and how the art was moving throughout the
centuries. How class and power were looked at, also gender and race in later
expanding fields of arts. Chronologies were used a lot even in the artwork to
explain what previously influenced the art. Tate is a museum for everyone.
Bones of
Contention: Native American Archaeology: A study began within the culture to
collect Native American craniums to try to preserve their heritage. Until,
people approached museums to have these people really buried. The new American
Native American act of 1990 that made museums take out the remains for the
Native americans. But because of this
act many studies are not able to be studied. Repatriation is in progress and it
takes a lot of time. Archeologists are only looking at the bone fragments and a
lot of the Native Americans are upset because they are not being treated like
they are human because they do not go with the bigger society.
An Acquiring Mind:
Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan:
Museums are never complete there are never the prefect art. Multiple
acquisitions of the world over time is what Philippe trys to accomplish to make
this Museum one of the best. The director of the museum not only wants the best
pieces of art but he wants the best of the best that represents the living
ability are able to express, and touch the people of today. Can never have
total objectivity, but you can try. Knowledge is what makes the museum
works.Conservation for works on paper is so hard to do. And it takes a lot of
time. How to repair drawings is the total emergence into tap water even Nyc
water is used. Even works of stone and metal are fragile. Using of xrays to
examine the pieces and useful to see what breaks the art has. Restoration is sometimes
noticed but the restorians do not want people to only focus on it, they want
people to focus on the originals.
2. Do the videos
relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If
no, explain why not. I do believe that these videos relate to my are exhibition
project because it shows how to be creative and to understand what you like but
also be open to objectivism.
3. What is your
opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts
you practiced while creating your curation project? Yes in my opinion these videos
helped me be able to illustrate exactly what I wanted in my curation project.
