Module 15- Critique Blog

1.     1. Which projects did you review?I reviewed the projects Any Landscape is a Condition of the Spirit, Aquarium of Niagara and Who run the world?
2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?I selected Any Landscape is a Condition of the Spirit because it clear to read and it was done most closely to how I completed my presentation.
3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them? The challenge I had as to analyze the whole exhibit as a whole instead being able to analyze specific slides. I had to view the exhibit and look and read closely to what the artist had written about the art so that I could get a generalized idea about the whole exhibit.
4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work? I didn’t not really like critiquing my peers because I do not know if I portrayed their idea correctly. Also, I am not an expert of artwork so I did not feel like I even had a place for doing so.
5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?I would like to see what my peers said to see if they had the same perspective I had.
6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?I would rate my article a 7, I rated it this because I completed the steps of critiquing to the best of my ability.
7. Did you enjoy working on this project? I did enjoy creating my project because it was something that I enjoyed before this class so being able to incorporate the two was fun.

Module 15:Video Review

Videos Viewed: Greenburg on Art Criticism:An Interview by T.J. Clark & Jackson Pollack:Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation.

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Greenburg discusses perception as being something that everyone has to get used to not using when they arelooking at art. He said to place limits on nothing is what we need to do and to keep everthing relevant is the key to being a good critic of art.
Freid and Clark had two different perspectives on modern art. Fried thought that it was more important to think about art as a individuality persective. On the other hand Clark looked at the art as more of a historical sense. All  three artists did express energy being one of the key aspects of art that needs to representative. Energy is something that they can see and feel while looking at the art.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I believe that these videos gave good reference on what to start thinking about when I view other individuals art creation projects.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
My opinion of these films are that one they are informative to the viewer however, I would of liked to hear more about how they got to where they could be critics. I guess the explainations of the art was unclear to me. They have way more experience that me in viewing the art, I would have liked to hear how they came to the information to begin with.

Art Curator Experience Blog- Project 4

My first step into completing this project was to first figure out what Art Curator meant. Through the videos and Google helped me understand what the definition was. Now, I had to figure out what I wanted to create in my Exhibit. I decided that I will go with something I know and that is sports. My theme was For The Love Of The Game. After I got the hang of what I should be looking for and how I wanted to represent my idea. I thought this project was very exciting and fun to do. It was different to look at the pieces of art differently now since the beginning of the class. I actually see the principles and elements and can explain them. To do this project on something that I knew was also very fun, because their are so many art figures that I wanted to put into my exhibit I had to pick and chose.

Module 13 + 14 Video Review

1.The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art
It is reactionary art; lacking in taste saying that surrealism is a strict manifesto, saying that lowbrow is all inclusive and any artist can do this kind of art, it is more of a “people thing”, it is a social scene at that point in time. They have a common love or experience that they want to add to it. It reaches out to the masses and people can really relate to this art and people are interested, it goes back to folk art. Rock posters are huge with bright colors and psychedelic art. This started underground comics. There is always a narrative punch a lot of dynamics in this art. This video illustrates that Highbrow requires some sort of intelligence; it is something that is learned. They still are not accepted into the art culture.

Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach: International modern art museum in the first year had 4 million visitors which makes it the most popular one in the world. This time period looked at ideologies and how the art was moving throughout the centuries. How class and power were looked at, also gender and race in later expanding fields of arts. Chronologies were used a lot even in the artwork to explain what previously influenced the art. Tate is a museum for everyone.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology: A study began within the culture to collect Native American craniums to try to preserve their heritage. Until, people approached museums to have these people really buried. The new American Native American act of 1990 that made museums take out the remains for the Native americans.  But because of this act many studies are not able to be studied. Repatriation is in progress and it takes a lot of time. Archeologists are only looking at the bone fragments and a lot of the Native Americans are upset because they are not being treated like they are human because they do not go with the bigger society.

An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan:  Museums are never complete there are never the prefect art. Multiple acquisitions of the world over time is what Philippe trys to accomplish to make this Museum one of the best. The director of the museum not only wants the best pieces of art but he wants the best of the best that represents the living ability are able to express, and touch the people of today. Can never have total objectivity, but you can try. Knowledge is what makes the museum works.Conservation for works on paper is so hard to do. And it takes a lot of time. How to repair drawings is the total emergence into tap water even Nyc water is used. Even works of stone and metal are fragile. Using of xrays to examine the pieces and useful to see what breaks the art has. Restoration is sometimes noticed but the restorians do not want people to only focus on it, they want people to focus on the originals.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not. I do believe that these videos relate to my are exhibition project because it shows how to be creative and to understand what you like but also be open to objectivism.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project? Yes in my opinion these videos helped me be able to illustrate exactly what I wanted in my curation project.

Module12- video reviews

Video: Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ’50s and ’60s
Video: Uncertainty: Modernity and Art
1.
Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The reason why I selected both of these movies because they both are about uncertainty art. Abstract art is interesting to me to learn how different artists approach the creation aspect of the art work. Then to see the artworks explanation in the words of the artists, I like to see if I have the same outlook on that piece of work as well.

2.
For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The keys concepts that I learned in the Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ’50s and ’60s videowas the meaning of expressionism. The style and color of the painting creates the subject matter. No matter if the color was bright and of a person portrait or if the color was light and the art was so obscure you can only imagine what the arists was trying to create. In the 1960 the landscape was so important but I could hardly tell whether it was landscape or just another image in the art work. Abstract expressionism was the most influential style for modern art. The way that John created a new “flag” image like we have never viewed before, encaustic used this method of brush stroke. He said is this the abstract notion of the current flag. Also he used different colors to express different aspects like in maps to use blue where green land would be most appropriate. This type seduces the eyes. Pattern was also important it was just something that the artists just felt like doing.
The key concepts that I learned in Video: Uncertainty: Modernity and Art video was that something broke 100 years ago and modern art was created.  I learned that in the early year art was inspirational and idealized and now the art works in the modern society it is all about changing values. What used to be called obscure which was not accepted in the prior years in this modern world just that is promoted now. Abstract expressionism was all about values/morals now those are also out of the question now it is just random.

3.
How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Both of these videos relates to the text very well, the abstract expressionism was explained in the text as something that was developed because of so many changes happened in the world like the world war2.Also this is a thought of the uncertainty of art video, because so many changes that have occurred the artists created modern art in regards to what we are as people. I believe that the uncertainty was a perfect concept that is defined to abstract modern art.
4.
What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
My opinion of both of these videos was that they went so far into depth with the description of the types of modern art and how the artists became interested with the art works in general, I looked at the historical artists work to see where that artist was coming from.  I was very interested to that aspect, to view to previous works of art to now the current modern art helped me understand the readings and the art concepts.

Module 11- Museum Visit #2

For this second visit I went to Burchfield Penny Art Center, here is an image from the Gallery Store.

When I first entered the Gallery- there was an exibit called Let there be light. Which was ironic because it was completely dark besides what the art light was giving off. The walls were black and were of a clothe like material. The element of this art would be line. Here is the image Light which is pretty cool because I used to used one of these light games when I was little.
The next artpiece was a portrait of an older woman on an off white wall kind of shaped like a hallway where this exhibit was. The lighting was not bring but not dark, on each end of this hallway the light was a little brighter. The image is bordered with a frame whick is black.
The last is an illusion/delusion Image which I thought was the most interesting one of all. I had to stand there for a very long time to see what the artist was trying to convey. I still do not really understand but I tried. This was made out of what it seemed like blocks of wood that were painted black and hung with string in this certain way. You can see that this light is very dull in the room with the off white walls. With only the light from the bottom and the very top which is why the artists made it this way so you couldnt see through the blocks that well.
These works of art were on different sides of the gallery. The illusion was all the way in the back and the portrait was in the middle of the gallery and the lights were before you entered the gallery(was a new collection).
To look at these images differently in the way they are put together and constructed is very different than really anything I have had to do. So, this took me a while to even get what I was suppose to be looking for. I enjoyed this gallery visit.

Module 11- Video Reviews

1.       Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
-The reason I chose the movies expressionism and the impact of Cubism because       these two periods of style are the most interesting to me.

2.        For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

-I learned that in The Expressionism that space and time are no longer a factor is this art. That the art is all about emotions which was shown by the feeling or more often by the expressions that the artist portrayed in the piece of art. Like in Munch portrait of faces are pure expressionless and are mostly like masks to depict this emotion. This style also questioned the value of the Conservationist society because it actually have a picture of how the society really was going. Color was the sense of nature, and nature has it own sense of direction and value, they needed to be separate of each other. Like in the painting of the Blue Horse by Marc obviously horses are not blue but Marc wanted society to see the beauty of the horse without the true colors.

- I learned in the Impact of Cubism video that patterns were produced with human impressions. One artist was saying he used spiritual elements from the imagination. He said that they use abstract things and turn them in concrete or moving general things into particular thing. For example he turns a cylinder into a bottle not the other way around. The connection with tradition is very important in this style of art. Also the emotions are depicted in such an abstract way to try to bring out the inner sound like in music is what the artist said. Displacement also was big in Cubism- looking for the inner voice or sound, a very abstract piece of art and making it something of your own on how to feel about it.

3.       How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

-The reading and the videos really reinforced each other on both of these videos. The videos showed in both the history of how the art style came about with what artists and how it was viewed in the societies.

4.       What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

-          I enjoyed both of these films because, when a certain style is described a work of art is represented and shown so that I get a image so that it helps to be able to depict what they the meaning of the styles are.
